What is IASTM?

IASTM stands for "Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization." It is a manual therapy technique used in physical therapy, chiropractic care, and sports medicine to diagnose and treat soft tissue conditions, particularly those related to fascia and muscle. IASTM involves the use of specialized tools, typically made of metal or plastic, with beveled edges and various shapes to apply controlled pressure and friction to the skin and underlying soft tissues.

The primary goals of IASTM are to:

  1. Break down adhesions and scar tissue: IASTM tools are used to target and break up adhesions and scar tissue that can form in muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia due to injury, overuse, or surgery.

  2. Improve blood flow: The technique can stimulate blood flow to the treated area, which can aid in the healing process and reduce pain.

  3. Increase tissue extensibility: IASTM is believed to enhance the flexibility and extensibility of soft tissues, which can lead to improved range of motion and reduced muscle stiffness.

  4. Decrease pain and inflammation: By addressing soft tissue restrictions, IASTM may help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation associated with musculoskeletal conditions.

  5. Promote tissue healing: IASTM can encourage the body's natural healing processes by addressing dysfunctional soft tissues.

It is often used in conjunction with other rehabilitation and manual therapy approaches to address various musculoskeletal issues, such as tendonitis, myofascial pain syndrome, and musculoskeletal injuries.
